College Readiness Specialist.
BACKGROUND/MISSION
Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) is the only organization to combine the power of education with
the grace and discipline of figure skating to build young leaders. We give girls 6-18 access to
innovative afterschool and summer programs that advance their intellectual, emotional and
physical health. Our mission is to help girls transform their lives and grow in confidence,
leadership and academic achievement. For more than 27 years, our award-winning programs
have provided girls from low-income communities with access to education, health and
wellness services to help them reach their fullest potential. Our vision is for every student,
regardless of socio-economic background, to acquire the foundational academic, social and
leadership skills to achieve her dreams. She will be a powerful speaker, an effective leader, live
a healthy lifestyle and be a global citizen. Headquartered in Harlem, we have launched our first
chapter in 2017, Figure Skating in Detroit.
POSITION SUMMARY:
As a vital member of the Figure Skating in Harlem Education team, the High School Education
and College Readiness Specialist plays a pivotal role in guiding our high school students, grades
9 through 12, on their path to college success. This multifaceted position involves creating and
implementing curriculum development tailored to high school students, crafting personalized
learning and college readiness strategies for each student, overseeing the collection and
assessment of student data (i.e. report cards) and facilitation of mandatory tutoring as needed.
The role is responsible for recruiting, training, and evaluating high school educators, and closely
collaborating with the full FSH team to meticulously track and analyze student data to meetgrant objectives. The Specialist serves as a visible and indispensable presence within FSH,
ensuring that every High School age student receives the guidance and resources necessary for
their academic and collegiate aspirations.
Key Responsibilities:
● I Can Excel (ICE) After School Program and Summer Dreams Curriculum Development:
○ Collaborate with the Vice President of Education and Leadership Development to
develop and implement engaging and relevant curriculum for students in grades
9-12, for our I.C.E. and Summer Dreams programs, ensuring alignment with
academic standards and college readiness goals.
● College Planning:
○ Offer personalized support to FSH high school students and their families
throughout the college application process, including assistance with
applications, essays, financial aid, and scholarships.
○ Maintain up-to-date knowledge of admissions and financial aid processes and
timelines, providing guidance as necessary.
○ Foster relationships with college admission professionals and secondary school
counselors.
○ Stay informed about historical and current trends in financial aid and college
admissions.
○ Facilitate connections between students and FSH alumni who can offer insight
into the college decision process.
○ Dedicate efforts to supporting each student and family comprehensively
throughout their college exploration journey, including researching potential
colleges, arranging campus visits, navigating financial aid complexities,
understanding standardized testing requirements, and crafting compelling
applications.
○ Actively engage with college admission officers and faculty to advocate for our
students.
● Career Exploration
○ In partnership with FSH Leadership and Development departments, lead
planning and execution for year-round career exploration opportunities for FSH
students, including our annual Career Week.
● Data Collection and Evaluation:
○ Oversee the collection and evaluation of report cards and other academic
metrics for all high school students, ensuring accuracy and completeness of
academic records.○ Lead efforts in data collection for admitted college students including tracking
school applications and acceptances, and scholarship offers.
○ Lead longitudinal approach to tracking and documenting program effectiveness
for high school students, including developing and analyzing program metrics,
administering student surveys and other data collection.
● Staff Management:
○ In partnership with the VP, Education and Leadership Development, recruit,
hire, and train frontline teachers to deliver high-quality high school instruction
that meets the needs of our diverse student population.
○ Provide learning opportunities for frontline staff.
○ Conduct mid-year and end of year staff evaluations.
● Collaboration:
○ Work collaboratively with the Education team and FSH leadership to ensure
alignment of programming with organizational goals and grant deliverables.
○ Connect students needing extra support with FSH tutors and monitor their
progress.
○ Proactively share student insights with the head of Marketing and
Communications to inform outreach efforts.
○ Perform and assist with other projects, initiatives, and duties as needed and
assigned.
The successful incumbent will possess:
● Bachelor's degree in education or related field; graduate degree preferred.
● A minimum of 2-4 years as a college counselor or admission officer at a college
admission office;
● Comprehensive knowledge of the college admission process and financial aid
requirements;
● The ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and remain flexible during a demanding
fall and spring application cycle;
● An interest in intellectual inquiry and ease in helping families manage the transition
from high school to college;
● Superior writing ability, strong organizational and time management skills;
● A genuine desire to work with high school students and their families;
● A high degree of patience, empathy, trustworthiness and decisiveness;
● A respect for confidentiality and appreciation of diversity in all its forms;
● A high degree of professionalism, stress tolerance, and the ability to manage conflicts is
needed;
● The ability to serve as a calming, logical, inspirational and rational voice among students
and parents as needed
● A high degree of energy, adaptability, innovation, creativity, and drive;
● A commitment to collaborative work amongst staff, students, and families;
● Demonstrated resourcefulness and self-reliance in working without constant
supervision;
● The ability to listen effectively and be receptive to feedback;
● The initiative to study changing trends, analyze data, and present to various
constituencies is highly desired.
